The wealth of a town was sometimes measured in terms of the number of barrels put down for the winter, and no farmer ever felt that he had completed his fall work until several barrels were put down into the cellar for the winter months.

It’s known that George Washington had cider included in supplies used in the Revolutionary War. John Adams made cider and drank it regularly. Historians report that in 1767, 1.14 barrels of cider per capita were drunk in Massachusetts.
